Valerie is a sturdy woman of 5'7" with short, brightly coloured hair worn in bangs. She has an intense air about her that can be mistaken for grumpiness. For this reason, and her sometimes snarky comments and slightly "off" remarks she's usually avoided. However, if befriended she can really open up.
She dresses in casual and practical clothes with bright colours and lots of trinkets. She carries around an all-purpose camera and tricked-out laptop in her slightly worn messenger bag.
Valerie "Val" Emerson was one of the nerdy tech geeks in high school. She had great marks in Science, Chemistry and especially IT. For a nerd, she was relatively outgoing and she didn't have too many troubles striking up friendships. However, being a geeky girl with techy interests made her stand out a bit, as did her quirky behaviour. After school hours, she dabbled in photography and theatre club; the latter to great acclaim.
After high school Valerie enrolled at MIT where she followed various courses, including Chemistry and Computer Science. She obtained her Master's in Cryptography and subsequently became an assistant in a security/surveillance company, Vigil Security.
As a consultant she was asked by her supervisors to dress a bit more conventionally but she still got away with it; mostly because the company (and her clients) didn't want to lose her technical expertise.
In 2010 she had to work on a case that later turned out to have supernatural aspects. Delta Green became involved in the person of Edward Gibbons. Together they solved the case, internally classified as "Silver Cone". Noticing her obvious technical skills and open-minded attitude, he recommended her to his cell leader, Peter Heart. Mr. Heart subsequently enlisted her as part of Cell W.
In the few weeks since "Silver Cone", Valerie has apprenticed herself to Dr. Gibbons and got a crash course in Delta Green procedure and the supernatural. She's still shaken by the "Silver Cone" case and hesitant to face more "weird stuff", but at the same time wants to prove her worth to her colleagues.
