Inspiration
From Shadowrun
Here are some movies, series and books that can help with understanding Shadowrun's themes.
Movies
Cyberpunk Core
“This is the Matrix, chummer.” Tech‑meets‑oppression vibe that defines the Sixth World:
- Blade Runner (1982): Noir atmosphere, megacorps, rain‑soaked neon. Foundational to the cyberpunk aesthetic, and one of my favourite movies.
- Akira: Urban decay, psychic power, and rebellion. And hallucinatory scenes that will haunt you.
- Blade Runner 2049: Identity, artificial life, and corporate power dialed up. Gorgeous cinematography.
- The Matrix: Hacking, virtual reality, trench coats, and attitude.
- Ghost in the Shell (1995): Cyberbrains, cyberware, and existentialism.
- Johnny Mnemonic: Literally based on the same cyberpunk roots Shadowrun draws from. This is how cyberpunk looked in the ’90s.
Street‑Level Crime & Heists
“Your fixer calls at 3AM.” Shadowrun is as much about jobs as it is about chrome.
- Heat: Professional crews, planning, and consequences.
- Ronin: Mercenary work, double‑crosses, and gritty realism.
- Collateral: Urban tension and the feeling of being hunted.
Urban Fantasy Energy
“Magic meets megacorps.” Shadowrun’s magic isn’t high fantasy — it’s messy, political, and dangerous.
- Constantine: Magic in a modern, cynical world.
- Bright: Far from perfect, but the closest Hollywood has come to Shadowrun’s “orcs with shotguns” vibe.
- Doctor Strange: For visualising astral space and magical duels.
Corporate Dystopia & Biotech
A corporate‑dominated world in which you can upgrade yourself.
- Elysium: Class divide, cyberware, and corporate cruelty.
- Upgrade: Body mods, AI, and brutal street‑level combat.
- AEon Flux (2005): Dystopian society, genetic science and biotechnology.
- Robocop (1987): Corporate overreach and cybernetic tragedy.
TV Series
- Altered Carbon (Netflix): what if you could transfer your entire being onto hardware, and “wear” a different body? Transhumanism, class warfare and noir in the neon future. Especially the first season is worth your time.
- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Chrome addiction, tragic runners, and Night City energy that maps beautifully to Seattle.
Books
- William Gibson - Neuromancer: the granddaddy of cyberpunk, defined many of its tropes, and a direct inspiration for the game.
“The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”
- Neal Stephenson - Snow Crash: for virtual worlds, corporate dystopia and the rule of cool.
