From Shadowrun

Shadowrun is a potent mix of its various influences. It’s many things across a rather broad spectrum which can make it tricky to define its essence. Visualising this, while tricky, can be a powerful shortcut through this.

Main aesthetics

Cyberpunk Noir

High tech, low life.

  • Neon-lit megacities and endless rain
  • Corporate arcologies looming over slums
  • Surveillance everywhere, privacy nowhere
  • Street-level crime contrasted with corporate luxury

Visuals: holographic ads, chrome cyberware, flickering streetlights Mood: cynical, paranoid, oppressive

Corporate feudalism

Megacorporations as modern nations.

  • Corporations have armies, laws, and extraterritoriality
  • Governments are weak or symbolic
  • People sell loyalty for wages and medical care

Aesthetic Impact:

  • Corporate logos everywhere
  • Security uniforms more recognisable than police
  • Corporate clean zones vs. filthy sprawls

Punk rebellion

Attitude matters.

  • Anti-corporate sentiment
  • Style as resistance
  • DIY tech, illegal cyberware, street mods

Visuals: mohawks, graffiti, patched coats, chrome limbs Tone: defiant, angry, sarcastic, whimsical

Magic returns

Fantasy intrudes on the future.

  • Elves in business suits
  • Trolls working construction or security
  • Shamans summoning spirits in alleyways
  • Dragons as CEOs and power brokers

Aesthetic Contrast:

  • Neon signs next to ritual circles
  • Totem masks beside cyberdecks
  • Ancient symbols in modern ruins

Street-level grit

Life is cheap in the shadows

  • Cheap soyfood and worse booze
  • Overcrowded housing and underground clinics
  • Violence is fast and ugly
  • Trauma patches and body bags are common

Mood: desperation, survival, moral compromise

Digital reality: the Matrix

Cyberspace as a place, not a screen.

  • Stylised virtual environments
  • Data visualised as architecture
  • Hosts look like fortresses, temples, or nightclubs

Aesthetic: surreal, symbolic, abstract Vibe: hacker mythology meets dream logic

Mirrorshades & Style

Looking cool is part of the job.

  • Black trenchcoats, armored jackets
  • Mirrorshades, cyber-eyes, AR overlays
  • Weapons customised for flair as much as function

If you’re going to die in the gutter, at least look good doing it.

Moral Grayness

No clean heroes.

  • Runners are criminals, not saviors
  • Jobs often hurt innocent people
  • Doing the “right thing” usually costs you

Aesthetic Expression:

  • Dim lighting
  • Muted colors
  • Conflicted NPCs

Retro-futurism

The future -- as imagined in the ’80s and ’90s.

  • Wired decks instead of sleek neural clouds
  • Chunky hardware
  • Corporate propaganda videos
  • Old slang mixed with new tech

Big hair, big devices, neon everywhere… but also magic, dragons, and hackers running the Matrix like digital cowboys.
