And what has Tasha to do with it?

Day 20
by Ashira

We finally found her. Zybilna — frozen in time. The massive dragon Jabberwock guarding her. Asleep… for now.

Nearby were members of Valor’s Call, also caught mid-motion in that same stillness.

The plan was to try freeing Ringlerun first. A simple idea: mortals usually have their given name as their true name. It might work. I handed the Alicorn to Dhanell — he’s better with magic than I’ll ever be — I reminded everyone to be quiet. Stealth isn’t exactly a shared strength in this group, so I cast Pass Without Trace to wrap us in shadow and silence.

It was working — until it didn’t.

The moment Dhanell spoke Ringlerun’s name, the wizard’s staff crackled and blasted the wall with enough noise to wake the dragon.

We didn’t stay to watch it open its eyes. We grabbed Ringlerun and bolted to the nearest door, slamming it behind us. A hallway, then another room. These doors looked small enough that maybe — maybe — the Jabberwock couldn’t squeeze through.

The Giant

Inside was a massive dining table… and a giant. Sitting. Eating. Drinking straight from a barrel. She spotted us and demanded cake. Eight layers. I tossed her a goodberry, hoping to calm her. I missed. (Smooth, Ashira.) When she finally ate it, she still complained of hunger. Said Kelek had promised her cake. Her irritation grew, and she stood up.

We circled the table, ready to keep running. Maeve saved the moment, casting some charm and telling her to go find Kelek — and the cake. Somehow, she listened.

Dhanell is gone!

That’s when I noticed it. Dhanell was gone!

Ringlerun asked about him, and I told him the truth: our wizard was at least as capable as he was. That made him want to know if Dhanell was noble. I just said “yes.”.

I slipped back toward the hallway, where only a minute earlier the Jabberwock’s head had been straining through the doorway. Gone now. I crept into its room. Empty. No dragon… no Dhanell. And no cleric. Had he freed her?

I rejoined the others. Frostbite found a massive frozen owl — Bloodybeak, maybe. We decided to move on, hoping Dhanell would catch up. In another chamber, we found a towering frozen cake — and the giant from before, now eating pieces off it. Three giant rats were also frozen. Odd.

Then — from the far side — Dhanell appeared. Alive. He explained he had freed the cleric and found the palace butler, who had avoided the time-freeze by being away when it happened. The butler claimed to know Zybilna’s true name: Iggwilv. If that was true, this was her cauldron.

Zybilna's true name

We hurried back to Zybilna. Dhanell spoke the name while holding the Alicorn… nothing happened. The butler had lied, or he didn’t truly know.

Meanwhile, Brolin was talking. And talking. Explaining far too much about our story to Ringlerun and the cleric. They also asked about their missing companions. We told them of the two who weren’t here, and the paladin frozen in a… difficult spot.

The paladin

We went to free him next. There was a jumble of plans — Ringlerun readying Levitate, Frostbite preparing to swoop, Dhanell casting Feather Fall. I didn’t care what they tried, so long as the Alicorn stayed safe. I convinced Frostbite to leave it to me, so it wouldn’t be dropped mid-flight. Someone whispered the paladin’s name to me, and I spoke it through the Alicorn. He was free.

Tasha?

The Valor’s Call members seemed only interested in capturing Kelek. I was more interested in that locked door we’d found earlier. I tried the knob, speaking Zybilna’s supposed true name — Iggwilv. Only a faint vibration. I tried other combinations. Same. Then, for no clear reason, I said Tasha.

The knob shuddered violently in my hand. My shadow flickered — not from any candle or torch, but from inside itself — as if it had heard something I hadn’t. Then it stilled, pretending to be just a shadow again.

That name was important. But not enough to open the door. Maybe it’s part of her full true name.

We gave up — for now.

The rope

On the way back, I asked Frostbite to get back my rope. He returned it… sort of. Then used it elsewhere before handing me another rope — one without a grappling hook. Useless to me. I can’t tie knots. I’ll get mine back eventually.

We continued through the palace. There’s still a part of it unexplored. Maybe somewhere in there is the missing piece of Zybilna’s name.

And if we find it… maybe the whole palace will wake up, and she can defeat the hags, getting my smile back.
