Time to get my smile back!
Zephyr, Frostbite, Dhanell, and I visited the Snail Racing because Zephyr wouldn’t stop talking about it. I picked a blue snail called Nimblefoot. Who names these things? Snails don’t have feet. They also banned magic, arrows, and anything remotely fun. Nimblefoot started slow. But then the crowd started cheering for us. Don’t ask me why. Somehow, we caught up, and it turned into a neck-and-neck race with Frostbite. I won, ridiculous! The prize? A small bottle of golden mist—a magical potion.
Crowning of the Witchlight Monarch
The monarch crowning event in the Big Top was next. Light took the stage, and released a golden ribbon from the vane on his staff. It danced through the crowd, weaving above people, until it chose Brolin. Better him than me. During the show, I spotted Witch standing off to the side. He kept patting his pockets like he’d lost something. I almost felt sorry for him. Almost.
Using the Leverage
After the monarch parade, Zephyr, Dhanell, and I went to confront Light and Witch. The others went to the Hall of Illusion to not be involved in the pocketwatch-borrowing-business. First Light wasn’t interested in leading us to Witch who was in the staff area, but when we mentioned the Coven of the Hourglass, he quicky cooperated. We told Witch we knew where the pocketwatch was but would only tell them if they helped us to use the mirrors. They agreed and Witch and Light led us to one of the mirrors in the Hall of Illusions. It showed our reflections as we are now. To cross, we had to say: "Hither, Tither, here and there, Wander yonder, show me where."
I proposed to go last. I think Maeve didn’t trust me, she kept insisting I told Witch and Light where the pocketwatch was before she left. I don’t know why she doubts me. I always keep my word. Finally she gave in and used the mirror. Before I followed, Witch touched my shoulder. "Remember the rule of three: Future, Present, and Past" he said. Then Light: "Find the Alicorn, and free the dormant queen at last." I didn’t have time to ask questions. I dropped the pocketwatch on the ground and disappeared through the mirror.
The Feywild
The Feywild greeted us with a thick mist. The others were already there. We found ourselves on a causeway high above a swamp. It stretched for miles, and below, giant mushrooms clung to the pillars holding the path up.
Since we had spent the whole night at the carnival we were all tired, so we rested right there on the causeway. When I woke up, it was still the same. Mist. Silence. No sun. Then, in the far distance, I spotted something—a balloon with a basket was dropping fast, it looked like it had a hole in it, and it disappeared into the mist.
With no other leads, we climbed down using a grappling hook. First to the mushrooms, then the swamp floor. Zephyr went last and figured out his wings worked better here in the Feywild. Lucky him. The swamp is worse than Baldur’s Gate sewers. The air stinks and insects buzz in clouds.
Singing Harengons
Then we heard singing. Six Harengons appeared with 2 giant snails. They carried clubs. "You’re being robbed!" they said. I took some steps back and drew my bow, ready to fight. But no—they weren’t after our gold. "We’re robbing you of your sense of delight," they said, holding out a large calabaza with a golden stopper we needed to touch. What kind of nonsense is that? Frostbite also was annoyed and hit the calabaza with his club. That made them stop. Before they left Brolin asked them about the hag's locations, but they only gave him a few useless tips.
With no better plan, we started walking toward the fallen balloon. The swamp keeps getting worse. The stench, the bugs, and those bubbles of gas keep popping up, like the swamp itself is rotting from the inside. Somehow I imagined the Feywild differently... But my smile is here somewhere and I need to find it!
