Quick he was
The swamp seemed endless, but we pressed on, and after a while, I heard something moving in the reeds. Six hobgoblins stepped out of the mist. They were red-skinned and walked with stilts on their arms and legs. Each carried a basket filled with eggs on their back. Eggs? Dhanell talked to them and learned they were just collecting eggs, not looking for trouble. He also got some details about the road to Dawnfall. We let them be and continued slogging through the muck.
It felt like hours. Everything looked the same: water, mud, reeds, and more mist. It was like the swamp didn’t want us to leave. Then, finally, we saw it—the trunk of a massive tree. Wooden walkways wrapped around it like a web, just above the swamp water.
The Tree Trunk
We started walking on a walkway and after some time Brolin noticed someone walking behind him. A cloaked figure was following us. When he threw off the cloak, I saw a Harengon holding a shield and an iron brand that glowed red-hot at the tip. He wore a ridiculously long blue scarf. It was Agdon Longscarf!
As if that wasn’t enough, bagpipes started playing, and his gang launched into a song—the same one the Harengon yesterday sang before trying to rob us. Two boats appeared out of the mist, each carrying four Harengon. Agdon hopped around, taunting us. I focused on him and placed a Hunter’s Mark, ensuring I’d be able to track him through his wild movements in the mist.
The song ended, and Agdon demanded we hand over our most valuable possessions. Before I could even shoot an arrow, Zephyr casted an Eldritch Blast, and the fight was on.
I aimed at Agdon and shot an arrow, striking him despite his constant hopping. Brolin took to the air with his Monarch Wings, chasing him through the mist, while Frostbite held off the other Harengon. Dhanell casted a spell that exploded with a deafening boom, blasting several Harengon off the walkways and into the swamp below.
In the chaos, Agdon jumped right up to me and struck me with his glowing brand. It burned as it marked me, and then he vanished. I couldn’t see him anymore, though I could still hear him. Maeve casted something that made him scream and run in fear, but he was invisible to me.
The fight was chaotic, but in the end we managed to capture Agdon, while two surviving Harengon fled. Once he was tied up, I kicked the air where I knew he was, just to make sure he was still there. My foot connected. That settled that. Frostbite also couldn't see him since he also had been branded.
During the interrogation, he told us that he had to give his most valuable loot to the hag. The rest of their stolen goods were atop the giant tree trunk. Brolin tried to take Agdon’s scarf, but it wouldn’t budge.
We climbed up to the top of the trunk, where the last Harengon ran off. Brolin found a wooden throne and sat on it, declaring himself the "monarch". I couldn’t help but smirk inwardly at the sight. Zephyr and I searched through the loot. Most of it was useless junk. I found Jingle Jangle's truffles and gave them to Brolin. Zephyr found a few things he liked, but it looked like trash to me.
We pulled Agdon up to the top with the rope, and Dhanell confirmed that the scarf’s magic prevented it from being removed. I made Agdon promise not to rob us again. He agreed, and for me, that was enough. I don’t care if he robs others—that’s just how things work here. Others wanted to throw him off the trunk to make sure he wouldn’t harm anyone else, but in the end, we left him tied to the throne instead.
Frostbite and Dhanell scouted the way ahead, leading us to a small rowboat. We pushed into the misty waterways. The channel widened into a lake, and then, from both sides, dark shapes appeared—two boats, each with two Bullywugs.
It seems the swamp has more to throw at us.
