It's just a Unicorn horn?

Day 12-13
by Ashira

We reached the tree, and the moment the children saw us, they started yelling for Will. A boy—older, curls, appeared in the doorway of the treehouse. A cat at his feet. We climbed the rope ladder up to talk to him inside.

The Treehouse

The treehouse was bigger than expected. Among the clutter, two things caught my eye: a unicorn costume and an oil can resting on a pillow. Strange. But then, everything in this place is. We explained why we were here—Granny Nightshade, Loomlurch, the things she stole and need back.

Then Maeve noticed something. The cat—wasn’t a cat. A displacer beast? A small one. Star! Zephyr pulled out the ball, and the way Star reacted made it obvious. Not that I cared. But Zephyr did. He started explaining things about Star like it mattered. Then Frostbite even started meowing at it, claiming he could understand her. He said something about "Mommy" and the ball making her happy. Right. Sure.

Loomlurch

Eventually, we returned to the real topic. Loomlurch. Will wanted to draw a map in the sand outside. I reminded him that some people actually carry paper. He started talking about saving the other children. I let him continue. If that’s what he needs to do, fine. A distraction like that might help us find the painting. Might help me find what’s mine.

We learned that the scarecrows scream if you get too close. Tin soldiers are guarding the place. Granny Nightshade sleeps in a dollhouse. That last part reminded me of the unicorn’s words at the carnival: "The hag sleeps in a dollhouse and can’t remember the first creature she sees when she wakes up." That could be useful. Somehow.

The children in Loomlurch make toys, but those toys don’t stay with them. They’re given away. And they cause nightmares. But more importantly, we learned the location of the painting.

There is more about Will

Then Maeve started questioning Will. Something was off about him. I hadn’t noticed—people in the Feywild are always strange. After he tried to avoid the topic Dhanell was done with him. Suddenly, his eyes turned to pools of darkness, wings spread from his back. Will was intimidated. And then, once the other children had been sent outside, he confessed. His real name was Mugan. He wasn’t a child. He was an Oni.

An Oni. A big, blue, evil giant. Or so someone explained. He used to work for Granny Nightshade, but he had been cursed by her sisters to be a nuisance to her. And since then, he changed. He felt bad. That’s why he saved the children. He liked the curse. Didn’t want it undone. Not sure how much I trust him. But a distraction is a distraction. I met Dhanell’s gaze, and I could see he was thinking the same thing.

The Alicorn

Then I asked about the alicorn since Will bought it from Wondrous Wares & Fair Fares. It turned out to not be an animal. It was just a horn. The one used in their unicorn costume. I asked for it—we need it to save the queen. Why? Because if we want to get back what’s ours, that might be necessary.

But Will refused. They needed the horn. Apparently, the children wear the unicorn costume to find a lake and fetch water. As if dressing up fools anyone. Ridiculous. Zephyr, of course, wanted to find the unicorn. Sigh. But we convinced him to leave for Loomlurch tomorrow instead. If they bring the unicorn suit, maybe we’ll find the lake on the way. And if they bring the costume, maybe I’ll find a way to get the Alicorn.

The Unicorn

The next morning, we left. After walking for some time, I had the distinct feeling of being watched. But I couldn’t see by whom. Or by what. Hours passed. And then, suddenly—a lake. It had the small island as Will described, and Zephyr, naturally, flew there and did the ritual to summon the unicorn.

A unicorn appeared ten yards away. Her name was Lamorna. She confirmed what I suspected—the horn in the costume was the alicorn of Elidon. And it was used to imprison Zybilna. She also warned us about the Jabberwock. An evil dragon. Apparently, we’ll have to defeat it if we want to free Zybilna. It hunts through Prismeer.

While she spoke, Dhanell and I tried to figure out if the children could find the lake without the horn. Lamorna told that if their intentions were good, they should still be able to reach it. Great, maybe we can get the Alicorn without making enemies.

The Attack

Then—suddenly—a cloaked figure leapt at Lamorna. Two daggers struck her. She vanished. And a fight began. Darkness. It swallowed the battlefield. And then it moved. Later, I learned it was Brolin. His new ability. Not very useful for me—how am I supposed to hit anything in complete darkness?

The others landed their strikes and the attacker begged for mercy. I stepped forward, voice booming, demanding he drop the daggers. Instead, he drank a potion. And vanished. Just before disappearing, he sneered, "The League will avenge you!"

But Zephyr’s lightning still clung to him. We saw the figure running. Dhanell cast a spell—a scream, then silence. A body fell. Searching him, we found only a note: "Get me that horn." Signed—Kalek.
