And why this dress...
I could barely see twenty feet ahead when the Bullywugs greeted us with their strange voices: "Welcome to Downfall". Zephyr wasted no time—he had put on an illusion and declared himself "Baron Zephyr Summerbreeze", and then, with a theatrical wave toward Brolin, dubbed him "Monarch Brolin." I’m not sure where Zephyr gets the nerve to pull this off with a straight face, but the Bullywugs seemed impressed. He told them we wanted to speak with King Gullop XIX, and they pointed us toward a jetty to disembark.
On the way, we passed a strange sight—several Bullywugs were repairing a massive air balloon with oversized frogs lounging nearby. Riding frogs? There was some discussion if we really should go to the king, but Zephyr promised it, and a promise has to be kept! I wouldn’t let him face this alone. In the end, with no other clear path, the group followed.
Rocky
We walked over wooden planks and crossed a shallow river by hopping over large stones. It was going fine until the stone Frostbite stood on suddenly moved—it wasn’t a stone at all but some kind of rock-creature! It introduced itself as Rocky and demanded a song as payment for letting us pass. Frostbite’s singing... well, let’s just say it isn’t a gift he’s known for. But Rocky seemed to love it! Maeve asked what else he might like. Rocky cheerfully replied, “More rock friends!” So, Maeve and some others started gathering stones and tossing them to him. Rocky seemed thrilled with his growing “family”, and we crossed without further trouble.
Why can I understand it?
Further along, we reached a wooden house on stilts, smelling faintly of burnt wood. Inside, we found a frantic Bullywug attempting to put out smoldering coals scattered around the room. He called out for help, and, to my surprise, I understood him perfectly. The others only heard gibberish. Strange... it sounded almost like Common to me... Another strange effect of the Feywild?
Without hesitating, I grabbed a bucket and helped extinguish the flames. Most others joined in, though Brolin refused to enter, complaining about the smell. What’s gotten into him? He’s always been so cheerful, but lately, he’s been acting more... entitled. Monarch or not, that’s not the Brolin I know. The Bullywug, who introduced himself as Duke Ichrind, explained that his workshop produces air balloons and baskets. As thanks for our help, he gave Zephyr a bronze brooch and suggested we wear it when meeting the king. Zephyr immediately pinned it to his hat.
Clapperclaw
As we continued, we came across a grim sight—tens of Bullywug heads mounted on pikes in the river, jabbering away as if they didn’t notice their predicament. They were speaking to a scarecrow: Clapperclaw! He was sad and explained that his real head—a large deer skull—had been stolen by Agdon Longscarf. Since it wasn't at Agdon's loot pile, it was likely handed over to Bavlorna. Dhanell and I struck a deal with him: if we retrieve his head, he’ll guide us to Thither.
The Monarch and the King
Beyond the bridge, we arrived at a marble gazebo where a group of Bullywugs lounged on pillows. One of them, wearing a lily-flower crown, held a large leather book. This was King Gullop XIX. Maeve introduced Brolin, and the king seemed intrigued by our little group. He offered to help us if we would bring the book towards Bavlorna. A simple enough task—after all, even one step towards her would count for that. He also mentioned something called the Soggy Court and insisted we dress appropriately before meeting Bavlorna.
A Bullywug named Splop guided us to the palace, where he retrieved the required outfits. I got a “dress” with a corset. Maeve insisted the corset was part of the ensemble but I didn't wear it. The dress I tried to put over my armor, the result was... unflattering, to say the least. Still, if this nonsense will get us closer to Bavlorna and our answers, I’ll endure it.
Octavian
As we continued we found an elf named Octavian playing his flute. He shared his tragic story: he had lost his loved one and made a deal with Bavlorna to get her back. But she tricked him—he lost his heart and was left with a goat’s heart in its place.
It’s hard to say whether helping Octavian will bring us closer to our goals, but his story is a reminder of what we’re up against. Bavlorna’s bargains seem to cost far more than they’re worth.
