This is not the carnival we're looking for

Day 9
by Brolin

Our cart continues along the tracks leading to a well lit area similar to the carnival, although all passers by are somehow unresponsive. But I don't have much time to ponder on this, as all of a sudden I'm facing my biggest fear; An elephant sized tortoise comes charging towards us. The others help me snap out of my paranoia explaining it was just an illusion. Well played Sephixo! Other scary events follow up in rapid succession, sometimes still managing to scare me and also some of the others. Wow, this scary ride did surely deliver!

To celebrate we 'survived' I get a round of drinks for everybody, need to remain hydrated of course. Frostbite has some frustrations to vent and walks of to the Striker Game and hits it hard with his club, leaving the bell ringing loudly. As we still got time before the Big Top Festival we wander around the carnival area some more. I quickly run past the snail race. Bad memories! But than we see the Pixie Kingdom, that looks joyful. Maeve will skips this to prepare for het performance later on. We all get sprinkled in glitter immediately shrinking to pixie size and we are asked for our pixie name. That's 'Carrotty' for me of course, first name 'Dan', but they ignore that latter part.

Inside the Kingdom there's an elephant sized puppy who's befriended by Frostbite who rides around on it until we have to go. The rest of us play hide and seek with the pixies. Starhusk has to find us and counts down. I hide in the flowerbed, but the flowers start talking to me. I try to eat one but they dodge my attempt. Crazy, wonderous world. I decide to find another hiding spot but she still manages to find me. Ashira saves the groups face by winning this round and is awarded a bag of pixie dust.

But now it is time for the Big Top festival so we all gather up and head over. Mister Light starts the show and announces the artists one by one. The first performer is a bugbear wearing a pumpkin covering its head. He does some impressive weightlifting tricks. Maeve is somehow clearly flirting with him. Curious what has happened in the past half hour between those two.

Next up is Palasha the mermaid. She sings a beautiful but somewhat sad song. I had heard from the pixies there's something going on with her and the mime Candlefoot. I look for him and he's close by indeed adoring her, but somehow can't speak. That might cause the sadness? Maeve acompanies Palasha on her lute and another musician Ellywick also joins in. Than it's time for Candlefoot himself to perform. He wants to break out of an invisible box and is tugging an invisible rope. Weird invisible world he must live in...

Now that the regular festival program is done, Light opens the arena for anyone who wants to perform. Maeve is there and ready. She gives a great performance and is again supported by Ellywick. At the end she receives a standing ovation and an invitation to have a chat with mister Light and mister Witch.

Ashira, Frostbite, Dhanell and me look for the kenku to have a drink and a chat. We learn that she is indeed the reason Candlefoot lost his voice and shows a cornhusk doll similar to him. I try an elaborate ruse to try and pickpocket the doll but fail.

Meanwhile the others have been talking to the carnival owners and of course have asked about the crossing to the Feywild. They seem to be holding back, but we're unsure about what. As a present for her magnificent performance, Maeve receives a balloon dragon from Thaco the clown. Burley then escorts them out, back to the public area. But not before expressing his concerns about the situation at the carnival. It turns out more and more visitors, especially kids, have disappeared recently. Also items have gone missing. He asks if perhaps we can help, but that would require to gain some leverage over the owners. Perhaps we could try to steal the Lights pocket watch. If we return just before the crowning of the carnival monarch and call out Burleys name three times, he'll let us in. As the others joins us at the kenku, we get her onboard and she'll arrange for a distraction. She now also agrees to remove the spell she put on Candlefoot by removing the bramble necklace from the doll.

Even though the atmosphere at the carnival has changed for us with all these revelations we continue our night and we're of to the next attraction. Meanwhile I gather posters of missing people. If/when we reach the Feywild we can keep an eye out for them. Next up is the Hall of Illusions. A big glass box with a doll in it is standing at the entrance. It's Tasja the Wizard of Hideous Laughter. A couple of halflings approach the tent and right in front of it one of them drops to its knees and pulls out a small box. Somehow this is such a humorous event that the other drops down and rolls on the floor laughing. The first quickly scrambles up and runs inside the tent. I approach the laughing halfling and also drop to the floor laughing so hard my belly hurts. I'm glad it wears of again in a few minutes.

Meanwhile we approach the entrance where Candlefoot is punching tickets. We explain to him what had happened to his voice and he offers free access to this attraction. Inside we see a girl with a pig mask running in. Somehow she doesn't have wings. I wonder if she has paid to get in? We also see the halfling who was just laughing on the ground looking for her partner. I decide the glass boxed wizard might do the trick for Ashira, giving her smile back, so I drag her over to it.
