So here we were, crashed on some planet that's supposed to be Gnapho II. While I was "upstairs", the boys had tried to descend towards the planet's surface. Apparently, some tree branch blocked the cargo lift and Morrison tried to saw it through. Unfortunately I wasn't present to film it for you, but l'imbéle launched himself and broke his arm during the "landing". Rusty and Knut saved him. Jasmin and I were then called. The footage you now see is Jasmin awkwardly setting Morrison's arm. She was severely shaken by the experience, so I gave her a cigaret to calm down a bit, something she gratefully accepted.
When this was all done, the remaining men (Mr. Van Maelsaeke, Knut and Rusty) were going to check the other parts of the immense ship. I hadn't seen Joris for some time, although I didn't realize it then and there.
Jasmin and I stayed behind to look after Morrison. Suddenly, the cargo lift shuddered and moved downward! I tried to stop it, but my commands were overridden. Jasmin ran away without saying anything, leaving me alone. I tried to hide behind some machinery but then the comms panel beeped. It was Jasmin who was inside our véhicule blindé and who asked me to not terminate the call. OK? Jasmin came running back and together we dragged a screaming patient into the tank. Indeed, Morrison struggled a lot. Jasmin would have none of it and applied pressure to his wound and tried to drug him, but the guy broke the needle. Meanwhile I deducted the camera's position and covered it with some cloth.
Looking at the screen, we saw the elevator come up. On it were about 10 humans of Asiatic descend. They were talking amongst themselves. Our internal translators couldn't quite process it, apparently their language was a bit weird. Before they left, I interrupted them with a timid bonjour. The following conversation was frequently interrupted by the screaming Morrison who had decided that he'd rather take his chances with the complete strangers.
I have to admit, the strangers did look to be very friendly people. And certainly, they were better organised than we had been. Just when I had decided that, some of the strangers had found our tank and knocked on the door. We opened it and let a doctor attend to Morrison's wounds. He correctly noted that he'd better take off his hoverskates, so I did so.
I talked a bit with various Asians, mainly with Chen Bang, the leader of the little expedition. It turned out that they were from Sino Bakk, a megacorps from Earth. While I accompagnied the doctor and Morrison I learned that their people had arrived here about 30 or 40 years ago. Indeed, Chen Bang wasn't born here but some of the other were! Worryingly, they more or less expected our arrival, but they didn't know anything about the Ada Lovelace.
The doctor and Mr Bang had other stuff to do so after they had "delivered" us to their vehicles I struck up a conversation with one of the guys there. I was trying to get a read on their culture. It seemed somewhat primitive and austere. They didn't smoke or drink des boissons spiritueuses.
After a while, it struck me that I hadn't seen Joris for a while. When the guys rendez-voused with us, shepherded by Chen Bang and his men, it turned out that they didn't know it either. We were ushered into a large van and started towards the Sino Bakk village. In the van I learned from Knut that intelligent, self-aware and independent robots were illegal. We had to pretend that Rusty could only follow our orders. Weird, but somehow I knew that wasn't the weirdest thing that we would encounter...
