Acquittal and new facts

Wednesday 13 December 2378

After a restless night I woke up in my (rather comfortable) cell. I'd been going through my footage the evening before, practicing my speeches. I didn't have any lawbook around and my guards didn't help either, so I hoped the justice system was somewhat similar to that of 3 centuries ago. I also hoped that I wouldn't be forced to use the footage where Kan lied about sending somebody to investigate the empty homesteads.
At 10 AM I was lead to the courtroom. Present were a judge, some secretaries, my friends and of course Jiao-Long Kan. He was looking rather smug but that was about to change. I won't bore you, my audience, with the ridiculous "offense" he mounted. I parried every attack with ease, trying to look humble so as not to avoid the judge. She fortunately admitted my footage, which clearly showed that I, in fact, had not offended Mr. Kan. The judge observed the footage and gave Kan a fine, and I was free to go.

My friends congratulated me with my acquittal. Once outside we discussed our plans. Jasmin and les frères wanted to go and join/infiltrate the Commune. Rinus was undecided, and Van Maelsaeke was very much against that, being horrified at just the thought of returning to the place of Jayden's demise. I could see both sides of the case, but in the end Van Maelsaeke's fear won out. We redirected Lars and Knut's focus towards finding the BKF for Ti Pao. Jasmin was placated somewhat by the prospect of visiting Macao, and reminding her that we still had a disease to fight.
Indeed, I remembered that I had received a call from doctor Ango the other day. I had totally forgotten about it, what with l'accusation and all. I reviewed the call. Apparently a package had been delivered for me at his lab. Another reason to leave Nanning as fast as possible and go to Macao.

Sunday 17 December 2378

We arrived in Macao on Sunday. I immediately went to visit doctor Ango, bringing Jasmin along. After the pleasantries the doctor gave me the package, obviously curious to its contents. But first I read the letter which accompanied the package. It was from the doctor in Lai Zun. She wrote that they'd found a cannister in the river near the village. It had had some sort of liquid in it, but was now empty. Jasmin went into research mode with the lab equipment from doctor Ango. It soon became clear that the liquid would be the source of the disease that had struck the settlers. A full report would have to wait. In the meanwhile, we resolved to go to Lai Zun to research the surroundings of the site where the cannister was found. I inwardly cursed the poor communications on the planet. This would cost so much time...

We report back to the rest of our group. One of the brothers made a good point: the cannister is made of metal, and that's a very rare resource on this planet. Maybe we can use this angle to find out more about the people behind this foul deed!

During the day, mon amie had offered a place by her side to some hip party she had been invited to some weeks ago. (By sheer chance, we were back in Macao just in time for her to attend it!) I politely declined, as I was rather tired, had some editing to do, and actually didn't feel festive at all. Moreover, parties always made me want to smoke and I had been cutting back in that regard the last few weeks. A party would made me relapse rather badly. I suggested she'd bring Mr. Van Maelsaeke, somebody who'd like to strut his social skills and actually had the social skills to not make a fool out of himself while doing so. Jasmin fortunately didn't seem offended by my declination. An enormous limo arrived later that evening to pick her and our eco-politician up.
